Coffee Stains: Don’t Kiss; Read Books

I thought it was quite humorous too. It had been a day that began with me being slightly hostile toward…well, a few things: being moved to another room so my classroom could be used for retesting of the ISTEP and a faculty meeting that had me say some things that ran contrary to most of [...]

Day of Jubilee

That’s what we call it. Straight from the Jewish Old Testament, every 7 years all debts were forgiven and it was a time of celebration. So, how does that translate over to the boys in our house in 2008?

Simple: PlayStation.

Accuse us of being controlling or applaud us for limiting computer use, but we allow [...]

How not to get a grant

And this is not a rant against not getting the Lilly Endowment for not granting my proposal “Writing a blank canvas: Arctic Canada and Northern Indiana” (There is little distracting about the landscapes of Nunavut, Canada and Northern Indiana. But in writing about place, I plan on crafting an non-fiction essay about the vast beauty [...]

Coffee Stains: Practice makes for more work

It’s the one thing that I can say to Evan that will guarantee a dramatic response. It goes like this:
ME: Evan, how was your day?
EVAN: Eh. Fine, I guess. (Fiddling with a miniature paper airplane as he looks longingly at the PlayStation2 which he’s been ground from for the rest of the week. These are [...]

Ending the first week; Cheating in Chess

Listened to: Slacker Astronomy, iTunes New Music Tuesday, a few Onion newsbriefs.
Afterward: fine.
I can't complain about the weather: it was a nice morning…in fact, I'm not sure the last time it was this nice out (or warm). Run was fine (I took [...]

This was also a first for me: the first chess parent experience. Advise to new chess parents: bring lots of change for the concession stand (candy is good) and [...]

Football vs. Chess

Sunday was a big day for sports: Super Bowl XXXVII and Kasparov vs. Deep Junior. Both were played in the United States and both brought a lot of media attention. The Superbowl was a romp and so was the chess game.
At least Garry came through for me.
The Oakland Raiders’ training camp was in my hometown [...]
